Mesothelioma occurs when malignant cells are found in the mesothelium—tissue that lines the chest and abdominal cavities, the pericardial sac, and also surrounds the outer surface of most internal organs, like the lungs. Here, mesothelioma affects the lining surrounding the patient's left lung (right side of image).
